Eco-friendly luxury at new Mara Plains Camp in Kenya

There is nothing more rewarding than reaping the great benefits of an African safari, while diligently giving back to the ecosystem you are admiring. Great Plains Conservation, founded by famed wildlife filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, has introduced a luxury camp that does just this; contributing funds towards maintaining the flourishing environment and supporting over 1000 Maasai families in local communities. This is responsible tourism at its finest, and to be able to lap up the endless luxury of Kenya’s spectacular Maasai Mara while ‘giving back’ makes this a destination not to be missed.

Silhouette Mara Plains
The Maasai Mara sees amber sunsets dipping below the horizon, affording beautiful dusk safaris.

Newly opened on a 100 000 acre private conservancy, Mara Plains Camp offers its guests an exclusive safari on the lands of the Olare Motorogi and Mara North conservancies, as well as, incorporating a portion of the Maasai Mara itself. The decadence of Africa is evident everywhere you look, beginning in the constructive makeup of the camp. It proudly offers the lavish comforts of home, and then some. Seven canvas tents are dispersed in amongst the riverine forest of the Ntiakatek River and look generously over the premier game-viewing land it is nestled on.

Game viewing takes guests through the extensive private conservancy, including a portion of the Mara Game Reserve itself

The luxuriousness of the camp does not detract from the sensual attractions of Africa, as the décor emanates the rich East African colours and textures. The purples and vibrant reds that adorn the local Maasai warriors are woven into the adornment of the camp, while Arabian-inspired woodwork fills the rooms and spaces, finished by warm copper, leather and colonial momentos. The main guest area carries a chandelier that Dereck describes as reminiscent of the romantic railway history of East Africa, adding a sense of storytelling to the atmosphere at Mara Plains Camp.

A generous and much appreciated touch is the addition of the professional Canon 7D camera and lenses, as well as, a pair of Swarovski 42×10 HD binoculars in each room that are on offer for guests to use during their stay. An exceptionally special touch that makes the world of difference. After all, one can only try their best to capture the astonishing display of wildlife that is to be discovered in the Maasai Mara. Warm and welcoming staff, scrumptious eating, luxurious flare and an eco-friendly operation are what bring this camp to the forefront of safari excellence.
