Featured Accommodation: Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge

Settled in a unique position atop an unusually hilly area of Botswana, Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge offers an eco-friendly, luxurious destination to visitors who have come to this country in anticipation of an incredible game-viewing holiday. The Savuti region of Botswana is characterised by the mysteriously temperamental Savuti Channel, which has been flowing for the last 3 years after an almost 30 year strike. Prior to this most recent dry spell, the erratic flowing of the channel gave temptation to the trees on the riverbanks to grow, but along with the periods of drought, these thirsty leaves dried and departed, leaving the characteristic skeleton trunks that litter the banks of the channel.

Extensive savannahs and intermittent camelthorn trees depict this precious western region of the Chobe National Park. A combination of the flowing Savuti Channel and grassland landscape provides an environment welcoming of Africa’s most sought-after predators and herbivores. Chobe National Park is well-reputed for top notch safaris, as it hosts some of the most abundant and diverse species in Africa. Here, in this ideal wilderness reserve is what Ghoha Hills guests can call their playground. The views projected from the heightened perspective of the main lodge has been described as bringing one closer to the heavens. From horizon to horizon, the deep indigo sky welcomes the night with a twinkling plethora of stars.

The main guest area is harmoniously built into the natural surroundings; an enormous thatch roof adorns the bamboo and canvas walls, while the wooden flooring extends out onto the deck, offering a vision of the Savuti one would only be so lucky as to enjoy. A genial fireplace lies below the raised deck attracting sociable circle of people to its warm embers after a day out exploring the glory of the Chobe National Park.

After dark, retreat to warm and welcoming, luscious beds positioned perfectly within the individual guests tents. Here, the comfort of complete privacy insists upon relaxation, as guests sink into the reclining beds, decked with down duvets and percale linen. Lime-washed wooden floors are dressed with wonderful, fragrant, woven mats to bring together the thatched roof and the natural, vegetative surroundings. Superbly decorated and lavishly appointed, these tents do not cut back on the joyous luxuries of private viewing decks that overlook the savannah and the bustling waterhole in the valley.

Children are welcome and are accommodated with their parents in one of two fantastic family tents that sleep four in total. Dining is an occasion of deliciousness, as guests are seated and served at the awe-inspiring main lodge, overlooking the exceptional view so that the beauty of the Savuti in both daylight and darkness can be admired. Freshly-baked rusks accompany the early risers’ coffee and picnic lunches are lovingly put together and taken along on any of the safari excursions conducted during the day.

The swimming pool lies just below the viewing deck and ties together the wooden structure of the lodge with the rocky hillside on which it sits. Invigoratingly refreshing during the heat of the day, the rectangular pool sinks into a stunning stone setting and sets the bar for one of the most spectacular views in Botswana. The natural elements and raw materials used and the melodious bonding of the lodge and the land, Ghoha Hills ticks all the boxes for ecological sustainability and decadent luxury, making it a perfect pleasure for any guests in search of the Chobe safari dream.
