Elephants Walk Through the Reception at Zambia’s Mfuwe Lodge

Did you know that at Mfuwe Lodge in Zambia, a herd of elephants walk through the reception area every October and November? They do this to feast on the fallen fruits of the wild Mango trees located on the lawns of the lodge. The matriarch, “Wonky Tusk”, refuses to find an alternate route so they simply stroll through the reception area. The herd is not concerned that there is lodge built on their feeding grounds.

Wonky and her crew have been known to visit the lodge’s gift shop and help themselves to the bar area. Recently, Wonky gave birth to a calf – Wellington who has joined the herd in their quest for mangoes ! This is quite a unique event and is one of the many reasons to visit Mfuwe Lodge.

Mfuwe is one the most interesting lodges to stay at in the South Luangwa National Park. Boasting 18 thatched chalets with private viewing decks and the opportunity to track wildlife on foot, Mfuwe is Zambia’s unique gem. Rates are from US $ 280. Contact us and we’ll arrange a stay for you at Mfuwe!
