Rare sighting of Black Rhino at Pondoro – by Brett Thomson

Regular safari guests will know – seeing a black rhino on safari is a rare sighting. So guests at Pondoro in the Balule Private Game Reserve were thrilled to see one recently on game drive.

Black rhino’s are extremely aggressive; however they are also social creatures as well, but a little less so than the larger white rhino. Females with young are sometimes seen with other females, and have overlapping territory’s. They sometimes associate with other males, however it is extremely rare to see more than 4 or 5 black rhinos in a “crash” together. Dominant males only tolerate other males when they are submissive.

The way to recognise a Black Rhino?

  • they have rounded ears
  • their head is usually held up high
  • they have a pointed upper lip that is used for browsing
  • their young always run behind their mother
  • they have a smaller body mass than White Rhino
