Lioness gives birth within the confines of Shumba Camp

This incredible encounter, which took place at Shumba Camp in the Busanga Plains, saw the lioness taking up residence under various guest tents and around a number of staff accommodations. She was often seen hunting in front of camp and was successful on many occasions. The two large dominant Busanga males were also around in the area and could be heard roaring territorially most nights.

It was a magical experience for everyone at Shumba Camp, but this unique event should not sugar coat the harsh realities faced by lions in Africa. Apart from difficult hunting conditions, lions are faced with a wide variety of challenges. These factors include hunting by man, poaching, habitat loss and human/wildlife conflict.

You can help save lions by visiting the National Geographic Big Cat Initiative, and even by visiting the Busanga Plains in one of the largest and most beautiful Game Reserves in the world, the Kafue National Park.

The best time to visit the Busanga Plains is between July and October each year, and our recommended camps include Busanga Bush Camp and Shumba Camp. Contact Us for more information.
