The Waterberg Biosphere Reserve in northern South Africa has some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country. The rise of unmistakable mountains features on every landscape of this scenic reserve, bringing an element of geological diversity that the Waterberg is known for. We have sung the praises of the magnificent Waterberg and its Marakele National Park, and if there is anywhere in South Africa we could recommend a peaceful, reconnecting, rejuvenating experience in nature, this is it. Perhaps it is in the presence of the mountains, or in the crisp, fresh air; but there isn’t a doubt that the Waterberg is one of the best locations for an open-air, outdoor, star-strewn, sleep out. Now, Thabametsi Treehouse gives us just what we are craving as a brand new safari offering from Marataba Safari Lodge.
The stylishly designed and expertly thought out layout of MORE’s Marataba lodges have run through to the build of Thabametsi Treehouse, which occupies an astonishing location in the shade of the towering mountains with views extending over the beautiful Marakele National Park. As an extension of Marataba Safari Lodge, but situated far away enough to allow for complete privacy and exclusivity to the treehouse occupants, Thabametsi’s role is to offer guests an even more in-depth and exciting way to experience the area. Not only are the day’s filled with adventurous and inspiring walking and driving safaris, excellent eating, relaxing spa treatments and even yoga activities, but now the nights are an experience in themselves.
It’s impossible to describe the stellar performance on a clear night at Marataba, as the sky lights up with stars that stretch from horizon to horizon, and from the treehouse, it is a simple matter of gazing upwards and reclining in supreme comfort in order to see this galactic display. The seclusion of the new treehouse makes it ideal for thrill-seekers and nature lovers in the form of couples or families of four. The “bedroom”, which in essence is a large platform adorned with furniture and a four-poster canopied super kingsize bed, sleeps two adults with two pull-out single beds which can sleep two children between the ages of 10 and 14. There is a lounge and a dining table too, taking this treehouse from merely a place to sleep to a place where one can sit back and relax, enjoying the view and spotting animals on the plains below, or sit down to a meal in total seclusion.
Guests who are checked in at Marataba Safari Lodge are given the opportunity to enhance their experience by spending one of their booked nights at Thabametsi Treehouse. At dusk, the experience begins as guests are escorted to their magical overnight abode and are welcomed by the contemporary, spacious, and beautifully decorated construction consisting of a level with a bathroom, double shower and vanity, and a top level where a king size bed is shrouded in a protective mosquito net, and a lounge and dining table are laid out on the large platform.
At the most beautiful time of day, Thabametsi guests are seated to gourmet picnic dinner complete with a personal selection of drinks from Marataba’s bar menu and left in peace to indulge and enjoy the sunset surroundings, wandering wildlife, singing birds, and each other’s company. It is ideal for honeymooners and hopeless romantics, but it is also an incredibly exciting and bonding experience for a family of four. Enjoy a delectable meal and perhaps some excellent wine as the daylight slips away and the sky ignites with stars. Lanterns and candlelight provide light to the treehouse, while radio communication gives guests access to the nearby lodge and staff.
There is nothing more energising than falling asleep to the sounds of the night and waking up with the sunrise trickling through the trees. Warm and comfortable bedding ensures an excellent night’s sleep (unless the lion roars keep you up!) and the memories of a night under the night sky are sure to last forever. We’re far too excited about this latest unveiling at Marataba, and you should be too!
