Cafes in Cape Town for Baked Goods and Sugar Mayhem

Do you know what a cronut is? Do you know what it’s like to sink your teeth into a Pain au Chocolat and taste Paris? Do you know what it’s like to reel in surprise when you see a syringe filled with chocolate? From the classic to the off-the-wall, our pastry chefs and chocolatiers in Cape Town are taking sweet treats to the next level.

Here are our top choice of places to satisfy your sweet tooth :

C’est La Vie Bakery in Fish Hoek

This little bakery is located in the seaside village of Fish Hoek. Not a town known for its trendy cafes, C’est La Vie has certainly put the town on the (baked goods) map. It’s a rustic sidewalk cafe with no pretences.  The owner learnt her trade in the quaint villages dotted around France. They literally make the best chocolate croissant in Cape Town (that’s what their French customers say). Head there to buy your freshly baked loaf of bread, cinnamon stick or croissant. Get there early – their products run out quuckly and they only bake a limited amount.

My Sugar in Sea Point

Artisan chocolate, extravagant milkshakes laced with popcorn and overflowing from glass jars, chocolate filled syringes stabbing croissants – these are a few of our favourite things! A few of their  delicacies include exquisitely brewed coffee, luxuriously creamy chocolate milkshakes and a selection of doughnuts. Owners, Kaylah Greenberg and Arthur Isaacs, are passionate about chocolate and ensure that only the finest chocolate is used in their creations. Each creation is an art piece and will leave you salivating for more. There have only been positive reviews about this haven for all things sugar and chocolate. There are board games adorning the tables , which means you’re encouraged to stay!

Desserts at MySugar Chocolate Caramel Shake

Four and Twenty in Wynberg

An elegant cafe and pantry, Four and Twenty is a gourmet place for pastries and savoury breakfasts. We’ve heard a rumour that the caramel and toasted macadamia nut cheesecake is one of the crowd favourites on the menu. But if that’s not suited to your palate, you could always splurge on the Shutupyourface Sandwich, a delightful marriage of all things sugary. This unique treat combines almond biscuit, chocolate cake, white chocolate/tonka crème, marshmellow crème, dark chocolate and honeycomb.

The desserts are only surpassed by the classic breakfasts on offer which are made up of only the freshest local produce and sustainable seasonal vegetables.

This small bakery is famous for its “doughssants”. As its names suggests, its a unique combination of doughnut and croissant batter mixed together to bring you a mouthwatering pastry. Jason Bakery also offers savoury dishes, which are equally as classic yet creative.
