Bull elephants fight to the death at Somalisa – by Brett Thomson

Guests at Somalisa Camp in Hwange National Park witnessed a dramatic sighting the other day. On arrival at Somalisa Pan, they found two bull elephants fighting, and the older bull had already sustained severe stab wounds to the chest region and was bleeding badly. Michael Haines was on safari that day, and although the fight took place behind some bushes, he still managed to get the photos below.

After a vicious onslaught the older bull collapsed and died, and immediately the younger bull took advantage of the situation and proceeded to ram the beaten bull with his tusks.

Although this where something very unusual and dramatic happened. As this was happening, another old bull elephant emerged from the East and came sauntering towards the two fighting bulls. The younger bull immediately fled and what happened next astounded the guides as well as the guests on game drive.

The old bull approached the dying beaten bull, and knelt down, and with one huge sharp lunge, placed his tusk through the collapsed elephant’s mouth and into its brain. The bull then got to its feet, turned around and left with a saunter not looking back once!

This was truly an emotional experience to watch as nature took its course in such a dramatic way.

I have mentioned it a few times before, but Zimbabwe remains one of my favourite safari destinations. Its wildlife areas are breathtakingly beautiful and truly wild. Here are some reasons to go visit Zimbabwe on a safari:

  • offers excellent value for money
  • great selection of diverse National Parks
  • remote, exclusive and affordable
  • excellent and unbeatable guides
  • great community hosting
  • big game experiences
