Ross Pride Update at Africa on Foot & nThambo Tree Camp – by Brett Thomson

Ross Pride of Lions in Kruger

After a turbulent few months, the Ross Pride seems to be recovering and doing well. It looks like the Giraffe Males have well and truly established themselves as the new dominant males and this looks to have stablised the pride. The Giraffe Males are a coalition of three, with two regularly spending time with both the Ross Pride and the Giraffe Pride, and then the other spends most of his time with the Giraffe Pride.

The Ross Pride now consists of 8 adult females, the two dominant males and then four cubs. Two of the cubs are approximately 7 months old and the other two around 2-3 months old.

Guests visiting either of Africa on Foot or nThambo Tree Camp stand the chance of seeing these two prides, both of which carry the white lion gene, and currently the Giraffe Pride has two wild white lion cubs.

Late yesterday afternoon, Roel (ranger at Africa on Foot), reported that they found the pride relaxing in the bush:

“Last night we found the Ross Pride again relaxing in the bush. We are happy to say that the two cubs look to be going strong!! we observed them for a long time suckling with their mother, they must have been hungry. Not to far from them we also found two males resting next to a dam, still digesting the waterbuck they ate the day before. On the way back we had a brief sighting of Rhulani, but she was too busy hunting for us to take pictures before she vanished into the thick bush.”
